How Home Renovations Can Affect Your HVAC System: What Every Homeowner Should Know Before Remodeling

Every renovation changes the physics of your home — how much heat it gains, how air moves through it, how tightly it's sealed. Your HVAC system was sized for the house as it was. If nobody re-checks that after the remodel, you end up with beautiful new rooms that are never quite comfortable.

HVAC is almost always an afterthought in remodeling — and it shows

Homeowners plan remodels around what they can see: cabinets, flooring, windows, layout. HVAC rarely makes the mood board, and most general contractors aren't trained to evaluate how a renovation changes a home's heating and cooling needs — that's a separate discipline. The result is a familiar pattern in our service calls: a beautifully renovated kitchen with an island that somehow feels 8 degrees warmer than the rest of the house, a new primary suite addition that the existing AC just can't keep up with, or an open-concept remodel where one corner of the room never gets airflow. None of this is inevitable. It happens because the HVAC system's sizing and airflow design were never reassessed against the new floor plan.

Adding square footage changes your load calculation

Your HVAC system was sized using a Manual J load calculation (or something close to it) based on your home's square footage, window area, insulation, ceiling height, and local climate data at the time it was installed. Add a room addition, a converted garage, or an ADU, and every one of those inputs changes. A system that was correctly sized for 1,800 square feet doesn't automatically have enough capacity for 2,200 — and if it's simply asked to do more without more capacity, it runs longer, works harder, and still may not keep the new space comfortable on hot days.

What to do: Any addition of conditioned square footage — even a single room — should trigger a new load calculation, not an assumption that the existing system "should be fine." This is a quick, inexpensive step compared to discovering the shortfall after the room is finished.

New windows change everything, in both directions

Window replacements are one of the most common remodel items, and one of the most consequential for HVAC load — sometimes in a direction homeowners don't expect. Bigger windows, especially west-facing ones added for a view or more natural light, increase solar heat gain and can push your cooling load up meaningfully. But the opposite also happens: replacing old, leaky single-pane windows with modern dual-pane, low-E glass can substantially reduce heat gain and loss, which means a system sized for the old windows may now be oversized for the house.

An oversized system isn't just wasted capacity — it actively hurts comfort and efficiency. It satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before it's run long enough to properly dehumidify the air or evenly distribute temperature through the ductwork, a pattern called short-cycling that leads to a clammy, uneven feel even though the thermostat reads "on target."

What to do: Any significant window replacement — more glass, less glass, or a meaningfully different glazing type — is worth flagging to your HVAC provider. It doesn't always require a new system, but it's worth confirming your existing equipment is still correctly matched to the house.

Open-concept remodels can starve rooms of airflow

Knocking down walls to open up a kitchen, living, and dining area is one of the most popular remodels in LA — and one of the least understood from an airflow perspective. Your ductwork was designed around the original room layout, including where return air grilles pull air back to the system. Remove interior walls and doors, and you change the pressure relationships the system was designed around: rooms that used to have a clear path to a return grille can end up pressurized and starved of circulation once the layout changes, even though the total square footage served didn't change.

What to do: An open-concept remodel is a good moment to have an HVAC contractor review your return air strategy, not just your supply vents. Sometimes the fix is as simple as adding a return grille in the newly opened space; sometimes it means rebalancing dampers throughout the system.

Kitchen remodels and range hoods create pressure problems

Upgraded kitchen remodels often include a much more powerful range hood or exhaust fan than the home had before — and high-CFM range hoods (especially anything approaching or exceeding 400 CFM, common with commercial-style ranges) can pull enough air out of a tightly sealed modern home to create meaningful negative pressure. That negative pressure can pull combustion gases back down a water heater or furnace flue (a real safety issue with gas appliances), make exterior doors harder to open, and pull unconditioned, humid, or dusty outdoor air in through any gap it can find — working directly against your HVAC system's efficiency and your indoor air quality.

What to do: Any range hood rated above roughly 400 CFM should be paired with a dedicated makeup air system that brings in a matched volume of outside air when the hood runs — increasingly required by code for high-CFM hoods, and a good idea even when it isn't strictly required.

Insulation and air sealing upgrades change your ventilation needs

Adding attic insulation, air sealing around windows and penetrations, or a full envelope tightening as part of an energy-efficiency remodel is genuinely good for your HVAC's efficiency — it reduces the load the system has to fight. But a tighter home also means less natural, uncontrolled infiltration bringing in fresh air, which is the ventilation your home was unintentionally relying on before. Tighten the envelope enough without adding intentional mechanical ventilation, and indoor air quality can measurably decline — more trapped humidity, cooking odors, and indoor pollutants with fewer paths to escape.

What to do: If your remodel includes meaningful air sealing or insulation work, it's worth asking your HVAC contractor whether your home now needs (or would benefit from) mechanical ventilation, such as an energy recovery ventilator (ERV), to maintain fresh air exchange without giving back the efficiency gains you just paid for.

Attic and roof work can disrupt ductwork you never see

Reroofing, adding attic insulation, or converting a vented attic to a sealed, spray-foam "conditioned" attic all involve crews working directly around — and sometimes on top of — your ductwork, which usually runs through the attic in a typical LA home. It's common for duct runs to get shifted, crushed, disconnected, or have their insulation damaged during unrelated attic work, and because it's invisible from inside the house, these problems often go unnoticed until a room starts running noticeably hotter or colder months later.

What to do: If any contractor is working in your attic for a reason unrelated to HVAC, it's worth a quick post-project duct inspection — a fast, inexpensive way to confirm nothing was disturbed before it turns into a mystery comfort complaint later.

ADUs and room additions: why "just tap into the existing system" backfires

With ADUs increasingly common across Los Angeles, we regularly see the same shortcut: extending ductwork from the existing central system into the new unit or addition rather than installing dedicated equipment. This can work if the existing system genuinely has spare capacity and the new duct run is sized and balanced correctly — but far more often, it simply spreads an already-adequate system's capacity across more square footage, leaving both the original house and the new space undersized. The homeowner ends up with a main house that used to be comfortable and no longer is, plus a new space that still isn't.

What to do: For most ADUs and larger additions, a dedicated system — often a ductless mini-split, since it needs no new ductwork and gives the addition independent temperature control — is both the more comfortable and often the more cost-effective long-term answer compared to stretching an existing system thin.

California's Title 24 rules that can get triggered by a remodel

California's Title 24 energy code isn't just for new construction — it can be triggered by remodels too, particularly when a project adds conditioned floor area, replaces a significant portion of existing ductwork, or involves certain equipment changes. When it's triggered, expect requirements like duct leakage testing, specific insulation values for new construction, and compliance documentation that has to be filed before final inspection. This catches homeowners off guard more often than it should, usually because nobody flagged it during planning.

What to do: If your remodel touches ductwork, adds conditioned square footage, or involves new HVAC equipment, ask your contractor directly whether Title 24 compliance applies — and loop in an HVAC contractor familiar with California's requirements before the ductwork is closed up behind drywall.

A pre-remodel HVAC checklist
