UV lights for HVAC in Los Angeles

Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light disrupts the DNA of microorganisms — bacteria, viruses, and mold — preventing them from reproducing. Installed in the air handler near the evaporator coil, UV lights continuously sterilize the coil surface (where mold commonly grows) and the air passing through the system.

HVAC in LA installs UV-C germicidal systems in both new and existing HVAC systems. We use UL-listed systems that are calibrated for your air handler size — wavelength and intensity matter for effectiveness, and we don't cut corners on lamp quality.

Types of UV systems we install

  • Single-lamp coil sterilizer — positioned to illuminate the evaporator coil continuously. Prevents biofilm and mold growth on the coil. Most popular entry-level option.
  • Dual-lamp air-stream system — treats the coil and the air stream passing through the plenum. More effective for airborne pathogen reduction.
  • UV-C + PCO combination — UV lamp combined with titanium dioxide catalyst for additional VOC and odor reduction.
  • LED UV systems — longer lamp life (2+ years vs 1 year for conventional), no mercury, lower maintenance cost.

UV HVAC Lights FAQs

Do UV lights in HVAC systems actually work?
Yes, within their scope. UV-C effectively kills or inactivates mold, bacteria, and viruses on the coil surface and in the air stream. Effectiveness depends on lamp intensity, placement, and dwell time. UV does not remove particles — combine with filtration for complete IAQ.
Are UV lights safe?
UV-C is harmful to skin and eyes on direct exposure, but inside an HVAC system you are never exposed. The light is fully enclosed in the air handler. We install safety switches that cut power when the access panel is opened.
How long do UV lamps last?
Standard UV-C lamps degrade in output by about 15% per year and should be replaced annually. LED UV systems last 2–3 years. We note the installation date on every system and recommend an annual maintenance plan.
Will UV lights help with odors?
UV alone helps with biological odors (mold, mildew) by eliminating the source. For chemical odors (VOCs, cooking smells, cigarette smoke), you need activated carbon filtration or a PCO combination system.
