Why a heat pump is the right call for most LA homes

A heat pump is a single high-efficiency system that does the job of your air conditioner AND your furnace. It moves heat instead of burning it — meaning it's 2–4× more efficient than a gas furnace, especially in LA's mild winters where it almost never has to work hard.

The math, plainly

  • One system replaces two. No more separate AC and furnace.
  • Massive rebate stack. HEEHRA + TECH Clean California + LADWP/SCE + Federal 25C can knock $5K–$10K off the install for income-eligible homeowners.
  • Lower bills. In LA's climate, a heat pump typically runs at a coefficient of performance (COP) of 3–4 — meaning $1 of electricity moves $3–4 of heat.
  • No combustion in the house. No carbon monoxide risk, no gas leak risk.
  • Future-proof. California's grid keeps getting cleaner; gas keeps getting more expensive.

Heat Pump FAQs

How much can I save with heat pump rebates in Los Angeles?
Income-eligible homeowners can stack HEEHRA ($8K), TECH Clean California ($2–3K), LADWP/SCE utility rebates ($500–$2K), and the Federal 25C tax credit ($2K). Most projects qualify for at least $3K; income-qualified projects can get $8–10K off.
Will a heat pump work in cold LA mornings?
Yes. Even our coldest mornings (38–45°F) are mild for a heat pump. Modern cold-climate heat pumps maintain full heating capacity down to about 5°F — far colder than LA ever gets.
Do I need an electrical panel upgrade?
Maybe. Heat pumps draw more amperage than gas furnaces. We check your panel during the consult. If you need a panel upgrade, it's often partially covered by the same rebate programs.
How loud is a heat pump?
Modern inverter heat pumps are quieter than your refrigerator — typically 50–58 dB at the outdoor unit. Older gas furnaces and AC units are louder.
Are heat pumps reliable in LA?
Yes, they're well-matched to LA's climate, where they rarely have to work near their limits. Expect 15–20 years of service with annual maintenance.
